Garage door opener not working: find the failed part first

An opener that stops working has failed in one of four layers, power, logic, drive or the door itself, and checking them in that order finds the culprit in minutes instead of guessing at parts.

Key takeaways
  • Check the outlet and GFCI before anything else; a silent opener is usually an unpowered opener.
  • Lights and sounds are diagnostic gold: humming means drive failure, clicking means logic or capacitor, silence means power.
  • A healthy opener cannot lift an unhealthy door. Half of dead-opener calls are actually spring problems.
  • Openers older than 15 years lack modern safety reversal and rolling-code security; repairs compete with replacement.

Layer one and two: power and logic

No lights, no sounds, no response: outlet first. Plug a lamp into the opener outlet; garage GFCIs trip constantly and the reset button may be on a different outlet in the chain. Power confirmed, look for status LEDs; most brands blink error codes that decode in the manual or on our decoder pages for LiftMaster, Chamberlain and Genie.

A rapid click with no motor movement often points to a failed start capacitor or a logic board fault. Capacitors are a cheap, common repair on chain and belt units.

Layer three: the drive train

Motor runs, door ignores it: the drive is broken. On chain and belt units the classic failure is a stripped main gear, white plastic shavings inside the housing confirm it, and a gear kit is far cheaper than a new opener. On screw drives, worn couplers do the same. A snapped trolley shows up as the traveler moving without the door.

Layer four: the opener is innocent

Pull the red cord with the door closed and lift by hand. Heavy, crooked or grinding means the door itself is the patient: spring, cables or track. An opener forced to drag an unbalanced door strips gears and burns out early, so fixing the door first also saves the opener. Balance and spring work live on our spring page.

Related questions

Is a stripped gear worth fixing?

On a unit under roughly ten years old with a sound motor, usually yes; a gear kit runs far below replacement. Older than 15 years, the math flips because of missing safety and security features.

Why does the opener work from the wall but not the remotes?

Lock mode engaged on the wall console, dead remote batteries, or lost remote pairing. Re-pair per the learn button under the opener light cover; it takes seconds.

The lights flash but the door will not close. Same problem?

No, that is the photo-eye safety system vetoing the close. Align the sensors until both LEDs are steady and the door will close normally.

Can you repair my discontinued opener?

If the failed part is generic, capacitor, gear kit, trolley, yes. When boards or rails are unobtainable we say so and quote a replacement with the labor priced in the open. Details on the opener service page.
