LiftMaster openers report faults through arrow-key blink counts on newer wall-panel models and light flashes on older ones, and the most common codes point to photo-eye alignment, wiring shorts or travel limits rather than a dead motor.

Up 1 / down 1 (or one flash on older units): safety sensors not connected or wire fault. Up 1 / down 2: shorted or reversed sensor wire, often where a staple bit the low-voltage line years ago and finally corroded through. Up 1 / down 3: door control wiring fault. Up 1 / down 4: sensors misaligned, one LED dim or blinking. Up 1 / down 5: bad receive signal, usually sun glare into the receiving eye or a sagging bracket.
The fix sequence for the whole family: wipe both lenses, verify both LEDs solid, re-square the brackets, then trace the thin wire from eyes to motor head looking for staples, kinks and chew marks.
Up 4 / down 6: the opener lost track of position or the RPM sensor faulted; power-cycle and re-run travel limits. Codes indicating excessive closing force or reversal usually mean the door itself got heavier, a spring is dying, and the opener is protecting you by refusing. Re-learning limits on a door that drags treats the symptom and cooks the motor.
That is the single most useful thing to know about opener codes: half of them are the opener complaining about the door. A manual lift test, door disconnected, one hand, tells you which machine is really sick.
MyQ-era units add beeps and LED colors: beeping with yellow generally means the door is moving on a scheduled or remote command; slow blue is Wi-Fi setup mode; steady green plus blinking blue means network trouble rather than door trouble. App connectivity faults never stop the wall button; if the wall button also fails, go back to the blink codes above.

Older units: count the flashes of the opener light bulb. Newer units: small up and down arrow LEDs on the back panel of the motor head, read as up-count then down-count.
Intermittent faults are wiring faults until proven otherwise: a nicked sensor wire that shorts when the temperature swings, or a connector backing off with vibration. That hunt is worth a technician hour.
