R-value measures a door section’s resistance to heat flow, and while higher is better, the practical jumps are from none to R-6 and from single-skin to sandwich construction, after which each added R buys less than brochures imply.

R-value is thermal resistance per section, measured at center of panel; doors reach it with polystyrene sheets (roughly R-4 to R-9) or foamed-in-place polyurethane (R-12 to R-18+). Center-of-panel numbers flatter every brand, since edges, seams and windows leak heat the rating ignores. Treat R-value as a comparison tool within a brand line, not a promise of garage temperature.
Single-skin steel: one sheet, no insulation, drums like a speaker, dents easily; fine for detached storage. Vinyl-backed insulated: steel face, foam board, plastic backer; the value tier. Sandwich construction: steel-foam-steel bonded; stiffer, quietest, resists dents from basketballs and bumpers, and the class we default to on attached garages. The stiffness is why sandwich doors also survive coastal wind better section-for-section.
Our climate argument is summer first: an uninsulated south-facing door turns a garage into an oven, and rooms above garages ride that heat. Attached garage, bonus room above, workshop use, or a door you can hear flexing in wind: buy the insulation. Detached lawn-mower barn: save the money. No; thermal resistance has diminishing returns in a space you open daily. The visible jump is from nothing to R-6 or so; past R-13 you are buying stiffness and quiet more than temperature.
Strongly, and in coastal Virginia summer is the bigger case: radiant heat through a sun-struck door is what insulation blunts best.
Kits add R-4-ish and some quiet, but they add weight the springs were not sized for. If you kit a door, have the balance checked; an over-heavy door eats openers.
They lower it, insulated glazing less so. Top-row windows cost little light-for-heat in practice; full-view doors are a design choice, not an efficiency one.
