A well-built garage door lasts 15 to 30 years, but it is a bundle of parts on separate clocks: springs are cycle-limited around 7 to 12 years of normal use, openers average 10 to 15 years, and rollers, cables and weather seal wear on their own schedules.

Springs: rated in cycles, one cycle per open-close. Standard 10,000-cycle springs at 3 to 4 daily cycles last 7 to 9 years; high-cycle versions stretch to decades. Openers: 10 to 15 years typical; gears and capacitors fail first and are repairable, boards and motors close the case. Rollers: builder nylon 5 to 10 years, ball-bearing steel or sealed nylon 12 to 20. Cables: 8 to 15 years inland, less by the water, always inspected at the bottom where they fray. Weather seal: 5 to 8 years before it cracks flat. Sections and track: 20 to 30 years when kept painted and dry at the bottom edge.
Rot and rust at the bottom section from standing water, panel damage that spreads through the hinge lines, discontinued models that make section repair impossible, and simple obsolescence: single-skin uninsulated steel from the 90s competing against modern insulated doors with wind ratings. A door replaced at year 25 usually is not broken so much as beaten by what replaced it.
Years 0 to 10: maintenance only. Years 10 to 20: expect one spring cycle, a roller set and possibly an opener; all worth doing on a sound door. Past 20: repair spending deserves the one-third test, if a repair crosses a third of replacement cost on a door this age, price the replacement before committing. A quality steel door, maintained, painted and kept dry at the base, yes. It will consume two or three spring sets and at least one opener along the way.
Cables showing fray, rollers showing flat spots and seals showing cracks, yes, cheap parts protecting expensive ones. Springs are the exception: replace on failure or on the second spring after the first fails, not on the calendar alone.
The insulation itself does not add years, but the sandwich construction resists dents and racking, which indirectly does. The daily comfort and noise difference is the true sell.
If the door is sound, replace the opener alone. If the door is marginal, do the door first; a new opener bolted to a failing door inherits its problems.
