Within roughly a mile of salt water, springs, lift cables and bottom hardware corrode years ahead of inland schedule, and the counterplay is specific: coated springs, galvanized or stainless cables, rinse-downs and a doubled lubrication routine.

Music-wire springs rust from microscopic pits, and each pit is a stress riser; a coastal spring can crack at half its rated cycles. Cables corrode invisibly inside the wraps and show fray first at the bottom loop where splash sits. Bottom brackets, hinge screws and track bolts bloom rust that swells and weakens. Oceanfront Virginia Beach, Ocean View, Willoughby, Buckroe and Grandview doors show the pattern so reliably we can often guess the street from the hardware.
At the next spring change, specify powder-coated or oil-tempered coated springs; at the next cable job, galvanized as the floor, stainless where the budget allows. Sealed nylon rollers ignore what destroys open steel bearings. Fastener upgrades cost pennies at install time. None of this is exotic; it is a checkbox in how a job is spec’d, and on shoreline calls our crew treats it as the default rather than the upsell.
Rinse exterior hinges, brackets and the bottom of the door with fresh water when the car gets washed. Run the lubrication pass from the maintenance checklist three or four times a year instead of two; the film is the armor. Watch for orange bloom on spring coils and fray at cable bottoms, and treat either as a scheduling trigger rather than a curiosity. The one documented oceanfront rescue on our cable page began exactly where this guide says it would: a corroded cable at the drum.

Rule of thumb: inside a mile of open salt water, fully; inside a quarter mile, aggressively. Wind direction and exposure matter, south-facing shoreline doors get it worst.
On coastal doors, unambiguously: modest premium, corrosion resistance where pitting kills standard springs early. Inland, standard springs are fine.
Aluminum and vinyl-skinned doors shrug off rust but dent easier; modern galvanized-steel doors with intact paint do well if the hardware is upgraded and rinsed. Where doors fail coastal, it is almost always hardware first.
Less; openers live inside. Their coastal enemy is humidity on boards and rails, cured by the same ventilation and lubrication habits.
